The family of Sheffield Village Police Lt. Aaron Bober has filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging that a failure at the Lorain County 911 dispatch center contributed to his death.

Bober collapsed at his home on Nov. 21, 2025, while his wife, Kaitlin, a registered nurse, performed chest compressions and waited for first responders. According to the lawsuit, an automated alert system at the county dispatch center wasn't working, and more than nine minutes into the 911 call, responders still hadn't arrived.

The family's attorney says dispatchers knew about the system problem but did not switch to a manual backup or properly alert the responding agencies. A letter from the 911 director reportedly indicated the problem had been known for roughly 90 minutes before Bober's call.

Sheffield Village Fire said the failure more than tripled its typical response time. The family's attorney says medical experts who reviewed Bober's records concluded the delay was fatal.

The lawsuit accuses Lorain County 911 of reckless disregard for public safety and seeks accountability and changes to prevent something similar from happening again. Attorneys representing the county and Lorain County 911 declined to comment on the case.

There was a scary morning for several Elyria families after a school bus headed to pick up Northwood Middle School students was involved in a crash.

According to Elyria City Schools, seven students were aboard Bus 116, Route 122, when the accident happened. Thankfully, none of the students was injured.

At least four other people were reportedly injured in the crash, however. The bus remained at the intersection while authorities investigated, and the district sent another bus to pick up students who were still waiting along Route 122.

School officials said all families involved were contacted and the students aboard the bus safely made it to school.

While the investigation will determine exactly what happened, the biggest relief for local parents is that all seven students escaped without injury.

Police in Lorain and Elyria worked together Thursday morning following two bank robbery incidents that investigators believe involved the same suspect.

Elyria Police arrested a 37-year-old man following a robbery at the KeyBank on West River Road North. Investigators say the same man was also connected to an attempted robbery at a Chase Bank in Lorain earlier that morning.

Fortunately, police say no weapons were displayed and no injuries were reported in either incident.

The investigation remains active, and authorities say additional charges are possible as detectives continue working through the case.

Ohio's latest school report cards are out, and Lorain County districts landed everywhere from 2.5 stars to a perfect 5 stars.

Lorain, Elyria and Clearview received 2.5-star overall ratings, while every other district in the county met or exceeded state standards. Wellington earned 3 stars; Vermilion and Sheffield-Sheffield Lake received 3.5; and Amherst, Firelands, Keystone, Midview and Oberlin earned 4 stars.

Avon Lake, Columbia and North Ridgeville came in at 4.5 stars, while Avon and Lorain County JVS earned 5-star ratings. For JVS, it's the school's second straight 5-star result.

Lorain Superintendent Dr. Jeff Graham emphasized that his district is making progress despite its overall rating, calling it Lorain's highest ranking since 2011. Attendance, achievement and early literacy remain challenges, while the district has improved in areas including gap closing and career readiness.

School leaders also stressed that state report cards are only one measure of a district. The state itself describes the ratings as a tool for local discussion rather than a complete picture of school success.

Lorain County has officially qualified as an Urban County through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development's Community Development Block Grant program.

That might sound like government jargon, but there's an important local benefit: the designation allows Lorain County to receive CDBG funding directly.

Those federal dollars can be used for eligible projects involving housing, infrastructure, neighborhood improvements and other community-development needs.

The designation could give county leaders and participating communities another important funding source as they tackle local housing and infrastructure priorities.

Lorain County Public Health and local volunteers took overdose prevention directly into neighborhoods recently, spending two days connecting with residents and handing out free naloxone rescue kits.

Naloxone is a medication that can rapidly reverse an opioid overdose, making it an increasingly important addition to household and community first-aid supplies.

The outreach effort wasn't just about handing out kits. Volunteers also talked directly with residents and helped connect people with potentially life-saving resources.

Local city partners and community organizations joined Lorain County Public Health in the effort, helping make naloxone more accessible to residents across the community.

It's a simple tool that can make a huge difference during an emergency — and this initiative is putting it directly into the hands of local families.
