Lorain Police are investigating the death of a 59-year-old Lorain man whose body was discovered Thursday morning in a vacant area along Washington Avenue.

Investigators say evidence found at the scene caused them to treat the death as a possible homicide. Authorities believe the man may have been deceased for several days — or potentially even weeks — before he was discovered.

The man’s identity has not yet been publicly released as officials work to notify his next of kin.

Lorain Police are working alongside the Lorain County Coroner’s Office to determine exactly what happened. Investigators are also asking anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual around Washington Avenue over the past several weeks to contact them.

Anyone with information can reach the Lorain Police Detective Bureau at (440) 204-2105, and tips can be provided anonymously.

A 29-year-old man will spend more than three decades behind bars for a frightening shooting that endangered drivers along State Route 58.

Nicholas DeJesus was sentenced Wednesday to more than 30 years in prison for shooting into traffic in May 2025. One of the bullets struck and injured a woman who was driving a van carrying disabled adults.

Fifteen years of DeJesus’ sentence are mandatory, meaning there’s no possibility of early release during that portion.

Judge Giovanna Bremke emphasized just how many people were placed in danger by the shooting, including both adults and children. She also acknowledged DeJesus’ untreated mental health issues while handing down the lengthy sentence.

It brings some closure to a case involving a random act that could have ended far more tragically.

A former Lorain County 911 dispatcher accused of improperly accessing a restricted law enforcement database will receive court-ordered mental health treatment rather than a felony conviction.

The case centered on allegations that the former dispatcher used the database to look up information about the mother of his child — an unauthorized use of a system containing sensitive law enforcement information.

Instead of a felony conviction, the court ordered him to undergo mental health treatment for at least one year.

The outcome gives the former dispatcher an opportunity to address underlying mental health concerns while still facing court supervision and accountability for the alleged misuse of the database.

There was some encouraging news out of Lorain County's court system as participants marked an important milestone in their recovery journeys.

Commissioner Jeff Riddell joined Judge Giovanna Bremke for a recent Recovery Court commencement ceremony celebrating people working to turn their lives around.

Recovery Court offers individuals facing substance-related charges an alternative path focused on treatment, accountability and long-term recovery. Participants work through a structured program designed not just to address their legal problems, but also the underlying substance-use issues that may have contributed to them.

Commencement represents a major achievement after all that work — and, hopefully, the beginning of a much brighter chapter.

It was a nice reminder that sometimes the justice system isn't just about punishment. It can also be about giving people the structure and support they need to make lasting changes.

Emergency crews were called to I-90 Westbound last Wednesday after a vehicle rolled over along the highway.

The Elyria Township Fire Department responded to the scene along with the Lorain County Sheriff's Office.

Fortunately, despite what could have been a much more serious crash, only one person was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

A big shoutout goes to the firefighters, deputies and other first responders who worked quickly to handle the scene and help the person involved.

Here's one to end on a positive note.

After an owl was struck by a vehicle last week, Sgt. Furci stepped in to help the injured bird rather than leaving it stranded in the roadway.

The sergeant safely removed the owl from the road and made sure it was transported to the Medina Raptor Center, where it could receive specialized treatment and hopefully make a full recovery.

It's a small story compared with some of the week's bigger headlines, but one that's certainly worth sharing. Kudos to Sgt. Furci for going above and beyond to help one of our feathered Lorain County neighbors.

This week’s grandstand lineup includes the OSTPA Truck Pull Wednesday at 7 PM, Lorain County Tractor Pull Thursday at 6 PM, NTPA Grand National Pull Friday at 6:30 PM, Combine Derby Saturday at 7 PM and Demolition Derby Sunday at 4 PM.

🎺 Swing Time Big Band at Lakeview Park

Location: Lakeview Park, 1800 W. Erie Ave., Lorain
Details: Lorain County Metro Parks wraps up summer with a free outdoor concert overlooking Lake Erie. Swing Time Big Band performs authentic big-band arrangements from the likes of Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Tommy Dorsey, Stan Kenton and Glenn Miller. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the music near the Historic Rose Garden.

🎸 Rockin’ on the River: Crazy Train – Ozzy Experience

Date: Friday, August 28
Time: Gates 5:30 PM; music begins around 6:15 PM
Location: Black River Landing, 421 Black River Ln., Lorain
Details: Rockin’ on the River brings a heavy-rock night to the waterfront with Crazy Train performing the music of Ozzy Osbourne, plus Billy Morris & Sunset Strip and Shawn Perry Vice City. General admission is listed at $10; kids 12 and under are free for this show. Lawn/camping chairs are welcome.

🎬 Movie in the Park

Details: Pack a blanket or lawn chairs for an outdoor movie night in the park. It’s an easy family-friendly option for a late-summer Friday evening in Vermilion.

🥕 Oberlin Farmers Market

Location: Downtown Oberlin, across from the Post Office near Oberlin Public Library and City Hall
Details: Spend Saturday morning shopping locally with seasonal produce and other locally produced goods in the heart of downtown Oberlin. It’s also an easy excuse to grab breakfast or coffee and walk around downtown afterward.

🛍️ Victory Park Summer Market

Details: Main Street Vermilion’s outdoor summer market features local vendors, artists, food producers and small businesses. A nice Saturday option for anyone looking to shop small while spending some time downtown.

🩸 SAW – The Musical

Details: Yes, Saw has been turned into a musical. This unauthorized parody takes the horror movie that started the franchise and gives it a decidedly comedic musical-theater spin. Probably one of the more unusual nights out you’ll find in Lorain this summer.

🎨 Splash on the Lake Art Show

Time: Gallery hours generally 10:00 AM–4:00 PM weekdays; noon–4:00 PM weekends
Location: Vermilion Arts Guild Gallery, 685 Main St., Vermilion
Details: Catch the final days of the Vermilion Arts Guild’s summer exhibition featuring artwork inspired by sunsets, beaches, Lake Erie and summer, along with beach-glass jewelry. The show closes August 31 before the gallery transitions to its fall exhibition.

⚽ Lorain Titans Boys Soccer vs. Euclid

Location: George Daniel Field, 2601 Oberlin Ave., Lorain
Details: Local high-school sports are back in full swing as the Lorain High Titans varsity boys soccer team hosts Euclid. It’s one of two Titans home soccer matches during this ten-day stretch.

🍂 Autumn Serenity Art Show

Location: Vermilion Arts Guild Gallery, 685 Main St., Vermilion
Details: With summer winding down, the Vermilion Arts Guild switches seasons. The new exhibition features fall colors, seasonal landscapes and autumn-inspired artwork from local artists and runs through October 31.

🎭 The Answer Oratorio

Date: Wednesday, September 2

Location: Lorain Palace Theatre, 617 Broadway, Lorain
Details: The historic Palace Theatre continues its busy late-summer schedule with The Answer Oratorio, giving local residents another live-performance option in downtown Lorain.

⚽ Lorain Titans Boys Soccer vs. Brush

Details: Another chance to catch the Lorain High varsity boys soccer team at home as the Titans welcome Brush High School for an early-evening matchup.

🤠 Rockin’ on the River: Chris Lane & Tyler Farr

Time: Gates 5:30 PM; music begins around 6:15 PM
Location: Black River Landing, 421 Black River Ln., Lorain
Details: This should be one of the biggest concerts of the late-summer Rockin’ on the River schedule. National country recording artists Chris Lane and Tyler Farr take the waterfront stage. Presale tickets are listed at $25, with $40 admission at the gate.

⚾ Lake Erie Crushers vs. Joliet Slammers

Date: Friday, September 4
Time: 7:00 PM
Location: ForeFront Field, 2009 Baseball Blvd., Avon
Details: The Crushers open their final regular-season home weekend against the Joliet Slammers. Friday is Fan Takeover Night and includes postgame fireworks, making this a particularly good family outing for the holiday weekend.
