TOP STORIES OF THE WEEK

🏛️ $145 Million Lorain County Jail Project Put on Hold

A proposed $145 million Lorain County jail project is officially on hold as county leaders take another look at how the criminal justice system should be funded long-term.

The Lorain County Board of Commissioners announced that the Jail Advisory Committee has rescinded its previous authorization to move forward with the project. That means the current construction plan won’t proceed for now while officials examine the county’s financial situation and potential funding options.

But that doesn’t mean the jail conversation is over.

The county will continue operating and maintaining the existing facility while addressing its infrastructure needs. Commissioners are also calling on the Sheriff, courts, Prosecutor, Clerk of Courts, Coroner and other county leaders to work together on a comprehensive long-term plan.

One possibility being discussed is a dedicated sales tax for criminal justice services, although commissioners stressed that no final tax proposal is currently being put forward.

Instead, officials say they want a broader countywide conversation about what the criminal justice system needs, how much it will cost and how taxpayers should fund it.

With $145 million potentially on the line, this is a discussion Lorain County residents will definitely want to keep an eye on.

🏠 New Programs Could Help More Families Buy Newly Built Homes in Lorain

Want to own a brand-new home in Lorain? A couple of programs are opening new doors for eligible homebuyers.

Through Greater Cleveland Habitat for Humanity and Welcome Home Lorain County, qualifying buyers will have opportunities to purchase newly constructed, owner-occupied homes built on vacant lots throughout the city.

Habitat is already accepting applications from potential homeowners and offers a particularly attractive benefit for qualifying first-time buyers: zero-percent-interest mortgages with affordable monthly payments.

Beyond helping individual families achieve homeownership, the effort could also have a broader impact on Lorain neighborhoods. Building new houses on vacant properties can put unused land back into productive use, strengthen residential blocks and potentially encourage additional investment.

For local families who have assumed a newly built home is financially out of reach, this could be an opportunity worth exploring.

🚂 Historic 1918 Caboose Gets a New Home in Downtown Avon

A little piece of railroad history is making a move in Avon.

A 1918 Baltimore & Ohio caboose is being relocated from Olde Avon Village to the historic Jameson House on Detroit Road, giving the century-old railcar a new home in the heart of the community.

The caboose was donated to the City of Avon by the Shops of Olde Avon Village, helping ensure this unique piece of history remains part of the local landscape.

City officials also gave a special thank-you to Ron Larson for his role in making the move possible.

At more than 100 years old, the caboose is a pretty cool reminder of the role railroads once played in communities throughout Northeast Ohio.

So next time you're traveling through downtown Avon, keep an eye out. You might spot a piece of 1918 rolling into its new home. 🚂

🐕 Former Lorain Police K9 J.D. Joins Titan Nation

Lorain City Schools just welcomed a new staff member — and this one has four legs. 🐾

J.D., a former Lorain Police K9, has officially joined Lorain City Schools after completing his service with the police department.

And from the looks of things, he's settling right into his new surroundings.

J.D. is described as friendly and calm, making him a natural fit for his new role around students and staff. After serving the community alongside Lorain Police, he'll now get to continue being part of the Lorain community in a much different environment.

It's not every day a former police K9 gets to become part of Titan Nation, but we'd say J.D. already looks pretty good in his new job.

Welcome to school, J.D.! 🐶

📚 Avon Lake Library Wants to Show Off Your Collections

Got a collection you're particularly proud of? The Avon Lake Public Library might have just the place to show it off.

The library is looking for interesting local collections to feature inside its public display cases, with openings currently available for November and December 2026, as well as most of 2027.

That could mean anything from local memorabilia and historical items to a unique collection you've spent years putting together.

It's a fun way for residents to share their interests with the community — and you never know what fascinating collections your neighbors may have tucked away at home.

Anyone interested in having a collection featured can reach out directly to the Avon Lake Public Library for more information.

🐾 Lost Pup Found in North Ridgeville

North Ridgeville Police are hoping the community can help another wandering pup find her way home.

This sweet girl was found near Sandy Ridge Drive and Meadow Lakes Boulevard, and police are now trying to locate her family.

If you recognize her, know who she belongs to or have information that might help reunite her with her owners, reach out to the North Ridgeville Police Department.

And even if you don't recognize her, sharing her photo around the community could help it reach the right person.

Hopefully this little adventure ends with a happy reunion and a trip back home soon! 🏡🐶
