TOP STORIES OF THE WEEK

🚔 Lorain Police Officer Facing Felony Charges Over Database Misuse

Lynnwood McGrier, a Lorain police officer, is facing multiple felony charges after investigators say he improperly accessed law enforcement databases, including LEADS and license plate information systems, for reasons unrelated to police work.

Authorities allege the searches were conducted without authorization and for personal purposes rather than official investigations.

The case raises serious questions about access to sensitive information and public trust in law enforcement systems. The charges are still allegations at this stage, and the case will now move through the court process.

⚠️ Woman Dies While in Custody at Lorain County Jail

The Lorain County Sheriff's Office is investigating after a woman died while being held at the county jail last weekend.

According to officials, the woman was booked into the jail shortly after midnight Saturday and was found unresponsive by staff around 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

Investigators believe she may have been detoxing from drugs while incarcerated and are reviewing whether she received medical treatment or medication during her stay. An autopsy has already been completed, but officials are waiting on toxicology results before determining an official cause of death.

As of now, many questions remain unanswered, and the investigation is ongoing.

🥵 Elyria Opens Cooling Center During Dangerous Heat Wave

If you've stepped outside this week, you know Northeast Ohio feels more like Florida in August than Ohio in June.

Because of the extreme temperatures and humidity, Elyria has opened a cooling center at the South Recreation Center on South Park Drive through tomorrow. The center is open daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and is available to anyone who needs a break from the heat.

One nice touch: pets are welcome too, as long as they're leashed or in a crate and stay with their owners.

With heat index values pushing into dangerous territory, city officials are encouraging residents to check on elderly neighbors, stay hydrated, and make use of the facility if needed.

🏫 Elyria Schools Investing $5.5 Million in Student Wellness and Support

The Elyria City Schools is putting more than $5.5 million in state funding toward helping students succeed both inside and outside the classroom.

The money will pay for counselors, psychologists, nurses, attendance specialists, and other support staff while expanding mental health services and academic intervention programs.

District leaders say the focus is simple: improve student wellness, boost attendance, and help struggling students get back on track academically.

The district is also partnering with several local organizations to provide wraparound services for families and students. School officials say the goal is making sure every student gets the support they need to succeed.

🎰 Two Lorain County Residents Hit the Lottery Jackpot

Somebody in Lorain County is having a pretty good summer.

Two local residents split the Ohio Lottery's $110,000 Rolling Cash 5 jackpot, with each taking home $55,000 before taxes.

One winner, a Lorain resident named Linda, discovered she had won after initially thinking she only matched four numbers while watching the drawing. The second winner, an Elyria man, didn't even know he'd won until his son called to tell him the news because the ticket was sitting at home.

Both winners say they plan to share some of the money with family members, proving once again that checking your tickets is always worth the effort.
